  1. An ancient stronghold on the River Bandon; held by Col Roche until 1650. After the battle of Macroom in that year – the Catholic confederation were routed by a charge of some 600 Cromwellian cavalry before they were able to form line of battle. The castle subsequently came into the hands of my ancestor Lieut John Herrick – and remained in the possession of my family for some 250 years. Lt John came from a Puritan family from Leicester and served in Col Rainsboroughs Regiment – almost certainly fighting at Naseby 1645 where the Kings forces were routed. (We still possess his Geneva bible).
