Robert Harris, 1946 – 2024

We are heartbroken. Our dearest, kindest Robert slipped away from us yesterday. My husband, my blogging partner, my companion in all our adventures, the love of my life.

I don’t know what the future holds for Roaringwater Journal, but I do know that all our readers will join me in raising a glass to the memory of this wonderful man – architect, folklorist, writer, musician, historian and proud citizen of Ireland.

  4. Here at Gormú, we are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Robert, a gentleman, a friend, and an inspiration. Robert’s dedication to collecting and preserving the rich tapestry of West Cork’s history has been a source of guidance for us. His body of work over the last decade on the Roaringwater Journal has not only contributed to our understanding of West Cork’s past but has also enriched our daily adventures, allowing us to share the depth and beauty of our dúchas with those who join us in exploring this magnificent part of Ireland. His insightful writings and photos, full of wisdom, have been a beacon for those of us who cherish local lore and history, plus the natural wonders of West Cork.

Robert’s legacy will live in the hearts of those who, like us, have had the privilege of knowing him a little and learning from his vast reservoir of knowledge. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and of course to Finola. His absence will be profoundly felt, but his impact will forever be a part of West Cork’s historical and cultural landscape.

    Slán agus beannacht, Robert.

  9. I cried when I read your very sad news that Robert had not survived his injuries. I cried for you too, to have lost your partner and collaborator. I remember with affection and admiration his playing on his favourite instrument for us when Valerie and I visited you. Robert had a great eye for landscape and invited us to look with a painterly eye at his photos and admire.

Robert is not dead because he lives on in the memories of those of us who met him and read his blog. He inspired us. You were a pair who taught us to be aware of the environment and to immerse in all things local and involve ourselves with local people and events. You are going to miss an awful lot but keep the blog going because when we read it we shall remember Robert. You are in my prayers that this devastate event will be mollified by the outpouring of sympathy and love on this comment column. Brian and Valerie

  13. Dear Finola,

I’m so sorry to hear Robert has left us, so sorry for your loss, you were the most lovely couple and I totally understand how heart-broken you must be. He was a wonderful man, a lovely soul, amiable in the best possible way, as well as multi-talented and I greatly enjoyed the few dealings I had with him when writing a piece about the Ballydehob Museum. He will be greatly missed, but by no one as much as you. I hope you feel great support around you, and that the funeral will bring you some consolation.

    much love,

  14. Dear Finola,

what a sad day, our love and thoughts are with you and the rest of Robert’s family.

Robert was very much a part of our lives for twenty years or so here in Chagford. We loved him for his music, his sense of humour. His passion and knowledge of folk lore, his aversion to red fruit, and most of all for his warmth and compassion and commitment to his friends.

We know his time with you in Ireland was one of the happiest in his life.and we are very sorry for your loss. You should know that many in Chagford will also feel his loss.

    With love and best wishes
